Once On This Island

Enlighted created some lighting assemblies for the 2017 Broadway revival of Once On This Island at the Circle in the Square theater in New York.  This one-act musical fable, set on a Caribbean island, was first performed in 1990.

RGB LEDs were used to illuminate a "trash tiara" headpiece and a flexible fabric panel that was mounted on the front of a dress, over the heart.  This costume is worn by Lea Salonga in the role of Erzulie, the goddess of love.

The color and brightness of each pixel can be controlled in real time from the main lighting console, and these signals are transmitted to the costume via wireless DMX.

The video clip below demonstrates some of the effects that could be achieved with the headpiece and chest piece, as recorded in the Enlighted studio.  After the parts were shipped to New York, other details were added to the crown and the chest panel was installed in the dress.
