Dave's Birthday Suit 2022

This illuminated outfit was created for a long-time client's birthday celebration. We installed LEDs in a dark blue velvet suit jacket and matching pants, as well as a cane, a top hat, and a pair of shoes. This page shows details for the overall outfit and the suit, and the other pieces are documented on the pages at the links above.

The suit is decorated with a mix of RGB LED pixels as well as standard single-color blue LEDs. The pixels are mounted on the collar and the side seams of the pants. In both places they are covered with a sheer black fabric that conceals the wiring while allowing light to pass through.

The velvet portion of the suit and pants are covered with a grid of blue LEDs, mounted with the lenses exposed on the outside, and the wiring concealed on the inside, under the lining.

The clip below shows some of the animation patterns for the suit jacket. The RGB LEDs on the collar and the blue LEDs on the rest of the suit operate on two separate LED drivers with separate mode switches. The collar can be set to be a steady blue, chasing blue, rainbow, or a few other effects. The blue LEDs can be set to a steady glow, a slow random twinkle, and a few different downward chasing effects that are intended to imitate rainfall.
